ایوانز، مورخ برجسته‌ی تاریخ معاصر آلمان، در سال ۱۹۴۷ در لندن به دنیا آمد.
او به‌عنوان استاد تاریخ رگیوس در دانشگاه کمبریج از سال ۲۰۰۸ تا ۲۰۱۴ و رئیس کالج ولفسون کمبریج از سال ۲۰۱۰ تا ۲۰۱۷ خدمت کرد.
ایوانز در سال ۱۹۹۴ مدال هامبورگ برای هنر و علم و در سال ۲۰۱۵ مدال لورهلوم آکادمی بریتانیا را دریافت کرد.
