Plot Summary

Keeping a Promise

A Sovereign returns to a skeleton with tales of war

Sunny,1 the Lord of Shadows, walks across the black dunes of the Shadow Realm to the Graveyard of Serpents, where Eurys13 the talking skeleton lies among ancient bones. A year has passed since the war between the Sword and Song Domains ended.

Sunny1 recounts how he and Nephis2 attained Supremacy, killed the old Sovereigns Anvil and Ki Song, and how Nephis2 became the ruler of humanity while he faked his own death.

He tells Eurys13 about the Human Domain, the resettlement of Earth's population into the Dream Realm, the Shadow Clan operating from the Forgotten Shore, and the looming threat of Nightmare Creatures. When Eurys13 mocks him, Sunny1 reminds the skeleton of his promise to try to kill him someday. Eurys,13 eager for death after millennia, welcomes the attempt.

May contain spoilers
Analysis

This opening reestablishes Sunny's voice and the central tension of his existence: he is a dead man walking, both literally (having killed himself to become Supreme) and figuratively (erased from memory). The conversation with Eurys frames the volume's theme of mortality versus immortality. Eurys, who cannot die, and Sunny, who has died multiple times, are mirror opposites. The easy banter masks profound questions about what it means to be alive, to be remembered, and whether existence without death is truly living at all.

The Shadow Clan Recruits

Rain's bank visit becomes a hostage crisis with zealots

In Bastion, Rain8 enjoys a morning out with her friends Tamar and Telle, then goes to NQSC for an academic conference. A routine stop at a bank turns violent when armed cultists seize the building. Rain8 and Tamar are restrained alongside other Awakened hostages. Unknown to the robbers, three Shadow Clan operatives (Corsair, Fleur, and Ray) are already embedded in the situation.

Rain8 uses her Aspect to assign Epithets, making herself appear Harmless and Hilarious, while Corsair assesses the Tyrant, the cult leader. When the Tyrant summons a Fallen Echo to torture the Vault Keeper, the Shadows strike. Rain8 forces the Echo's dismissal by Naming it, then aids Corsair in incinerating the Tyrant with a spoken True Name of Fire.

May contain spoilers
Analysis

This sequence introduces the Shadow Clan as Sunny's clandestine force operating across both worlds, and showcases Rain's unconventional Aspect: the power to give Names and Epithets that alter reality. The bank robbery reveals a deeper threat: doomsday cults spreading in the wake of Nephis's revelation about Earth's fate. Rain's pacifist nature contrasts sharply with her lethal effectiveness, a paradox that defines her character. The episode also demonstrates how the Shadow Clan operates as a hidden dagger, dealing with threats the Fire Keepers cannot address publicly.

Aiko's Unplanned Discovery

Babysitting Little Ling exposes a Skinwalker infiltration in Bastion

Aiko14 takes Little Ling, Effie's3 six-year-old Transcendent son, on what she calls an educational trip through Bastion. They visit businesses, negotiate contracts, and buy an ice cream shop. At the city gates, Aiko14 meets a caravan master to receive special cargo, but Little Ling dislikes the man's scent.

When the supposed merchant fails to haggle over payment, Aiko14 realizes he is a Skinwalker vessel that somehow passed all inspection countermeasures. She summons a communication mirror to relay targeting data to Effie,3 who hurls her spear from the castle across the city. The spear pulverizes the vessel, exposing a massive security breach: the Skinwalker has learned to evade detection sorcery, meaning every human city may be infiltrated.

May contain spoilers
Analysis

Aiko, a mere Awakened, proves that intelligence and resourcefulness rival raw power. Her comedic 'educational trip' masks a serious lesson for Little Ling about influence and leverage. The Skinwalker's ability to bypass detection is a chilling escalation: the Great Terror is learning, adapting, and closing in. Effie's instantaneous response from across the city demonstrates the terrifying reach of a Transcendent warrior within her domain. The scene also deepens the found-family dynamics among the cohort, with Aiko serving as an unlikely but devoted 'auntie.'

The Full Moon Duel

Nephis faces a Cursed Demon alone beneath Bastion

During the full moon, when the boundary between reality and reflection thins, Nephis2 guards Bastion while Sunny1 is in Ravenheart. A Cursed Demon called Abjuration stirs in True Bastion, the horror that Mordret6 once fled. Nephis2 descends into the lake's reflection and confronts the mountain of grey flesh with a hundred skeletal limbs.

Abjuration wields the power of denial: anything it rejects ceases to exist. It tries to erase Nephis2 entirely, but her Domain encompasses billions of human souls, anchoring her existence. Nephis2 invokes the Name of Passion, a new Shaping she has mastered, setting her desire ablaze. The world burns, and Abjuration burns with it, unable to deny her incinerating will. She kills it alone.

May contain spoilers
Analysis

Nephis's battle exemplifies a Sovereign's lonely burden. While Sunny fights alongside companions, she faces extinction-level threats solo. Her victory through the Name of Passion represents a breakthrough in her Aspect Legacy, the Knowledge of Passion, and reveals the mechanism of divine combat: Wills clash, concepts contend, and the more absolute desire prevails. The battle also clears the path to the Mirror Maze beneath Bastion, setting up the next major arc. Nephis's willingness to bear solitary agony for humanity's protection is both heroic and deeply isolating.

Sucked into the Death Game

A jade board imprisons Sunny, Kai, and Slayer

In the Toy Room of the Jade Palace, Sunny1 finds an ancient jade board: the Death Game, created by Ariel the Demon of Dread. When he reads the runes carved into its sides (Snow, Ash, Fear, Truth), the world dissolves.

He, Kai,4 and Slayer10 awaken as the Ash Tyrant and two Ash Beasts in a realm of 49 mountains separated by a sea of clouds. Against them stand 12 Snow figures: Nightmare Creatures ranging from Great Beasts to a Cursed Tyrant. Sunny's1 powers are suppressed, his Soul Sea sealed.

At dawn, crystalline insect-abominations fly across an ethereal bridge to attack the Ash Castle. Sunny,1 Kai,4 and Slayer10 slay the swarm, and Sunny1 discovers he can summon shades of slain enemies. The first victory comes at a cost: the Ash Domain is reduced to a single volcano.

May contain spoilers
Analysis

The Death Game is a microcosm of the Nightmare Spell itself: a ruthless crucible designed to forge the weak into the strong through impossible odds. Sunny's situation mirrors his earliest days as a Sleeper, stripped of power and forced to rely on cunning. The game's rules (domain control, Shrines, Castles) create a strategic layer atop the visceral horror of fighting Great and Cursed beings. Kai's role as observer and archer companion echoes his position in the original cohort: supportive, essential, yet doubting his worth. Slayer's silent competence foreshadows revelations about her true nature.

Gods on the Game Board

Sunny kills the infinite worm Abundance, his first Cursed Beast

Sunny1 chooses to attack the Snow Worm, a Cursed Beast embodying the concept of infinity. Its pale body can grow endlessly, wrapping around entire mountains. Sunny1 crafts enchanted arrows for Kai4 and Slayer10 that pin segments of the worm in space, constricting its infinite power. As his Obsidian Wasp shades burrow into its flesh, Sunny1 poisons its soul with Death Will.

The battle ravages the mountain, and when the worm shrinks to a tiny maggot, Sunny1 crushes it under his boot. The corpse yields a Sacred soul shard and a jade figurine. This is the first Cursed being Sunny1 has killed, and the shade of Abundance joins his Shadow Legion, allowing him to grow his army exponentially by turning enemies into soldiers.

May contain spoilers
Analysis

The Abundance battle introduces the conceptual nature of high-Rank combat: a Cursed Beast is not merely powerful but the embodiment of a principle (infinity). Sunny's victory comes from understanding this principle and countering it with finality (arrows that lock in space, Death Will that imposes limits). This lesson will prove essential for all future god-level battles. The worm's transformation from world-devouring horror to pathetic maggot is a darkly comic illustration of how absolute power, once its supporting concept is undermined, becomes absurdly fragile.

The Shrine of Truth

A desperate siege ends with a mountain-destroying enchantment

Sunny1 reaches the Shrine of Truth, where sacrifices grant power. Three Snow figures surround the volcano: the Wolf (a Cursed Demon and primordial predator), a pack of Snow Wolves, and the Brass Giant. Sunny1 weaves a Grand Enchantment into the mountain itself, based on the Patient Avenger shield: it absorbs damage and releases it as catastrophic heat and shockwaves.

He channels the concept of the Hunter to oppose the Wolf's predatory essence, stalling the Demon while the volcano charges. When the enchantment activates, the entire mountain detonates in a blinding conflagration. The Wolf, the pack, and the Giant are annihilated. Only the Shrine platform survives, floating on a lake of lava.

May contain spoilers
Analysis

Sunny's mountain-enchanting feat represents a quantum leap in his sorcery: scaling a Memory enchantment to geographic proportions. The Hunter vs. Wolf conceptual battle is a prototype of the sixth step of Shadow Dance, where he will learn to embody opposing concepts to defeat superior foes. The battle is also a testament to preparation over raw power; Sunny would have lost without days of advance planning. The destruction of the mountain itself becomes a weapon, illustrating how a cunning mind can turn the environment into an ally.

Two Days Erased

A Mind Demon attacks and no one remembers winning

When Kai4 describes the next Snow figure, a Cursed Demon, both he and Sunny1 fall under a mental attack. Two full days vanish from their memories. When they regain consciousness, the battle is over. Three jade figurines sit on the altar, proving the enemies are dead. Slayer10 is wounded, Kai4 is pinned to a pillar by arrows, and Sunny1 is missing an arm.

Evidence suggests the three of them fought not only the abominations but each other. Near Sunny's1 severed arm, an impossibly thin thread of black silk is found: someone severed the Snow Tyrant's control string, freeing one monster to rampage. The Cursed Demon and one Monster are simply gone, erased without explanation.

May contain spoilers
Analysis

The erased days are the volume's most unsettling sequence, weaponizing narrative absence itself. Sunny's admission that he does not know what happened is a profound vulnerability for a character defined by control and knowledge. The invisible strings controlling the Snow figures mirror the Strings of Fate controlling all existence, and the severed string hints that even a Tyrant's puppets can rebel. This loss of memory also foreshadows the identity of the Snow Tyrant, a being of doubt and mental manipulation: the Puppeteer Moth.

The Puppeteer's Gambit

A Cursed Tyrant speaks, offering philosophy and lies

The final enemy is a gargantuan black moth perching atop the Snow Castle: the Puppeteer Moth, a worm of doubt that once consumed the Mountain King. When Sunny1 arrives, the moth speaks in a soft voice, calling him 'Liberator.' It claims it is not ruled by Corruption's madness, philosophizing that all beings are fuel for the Flame of Desire.

Sunny1 recognizes the tactic: the Puppeteer stalls while its invisible strings bind him. Kai4 and Slayer10 are already entangled in black silk. The Puppeteer reveals it made a deal with Weaver long ago, promised freedom in exchange for playing the Death Game. Sunny,1 nearly paralyzed by doubt, expels the disobedient shade of Condemnation from his soul, breaking the board's rules.

May contain spoilers
Analysis

The Puppeteer's eloquence is its deadliest weapon: a Cursed Tyrant that fights with ideas rather than claws. Its arguments about the Flame of Desire consuming all living things as fuel echo genuine philosophical questions about the nature of existence in the Dream Realm. Sunny's near-seduction by these ideas demonstrates his vulnerability: he is a man plagued by doubt, and the Puppeteer exploits every crack in his psychological armor. The expulsion of Condemnation, a shade he cannot control, represents Sunny at his most desperate and creative, weaponizing chaos itself.

Becoming the Jade Titan

Sunny masters the Fifth Step of Shadow Dance to survive

To resist the Puppeteer's doubt-based control, Sunny1 performs the Fifth Step of Shadow Dance: he becomes a Stone Saint,9 shadowing Saint's9 Attributes and nature. As a creature of Nether's making, he is immune to mind attacks.

The Jade Titan towers over the battlefield, wielding sword and shield, accompanied by the Wolf shade. Saint's9 essence fills his mind, and he almost forgets his true self. Kai4 recites the names of everyone Sunny1 loves (Nephis,2 Cassie,12 Effie,3 Rain,8 Jet,5 and others), pulling him back from the brink.

The Puppeteer, seeing its doubt-strings useless against the stalwart Stone Saint, attempts to use logic instead, arguing they should be allies against the gods. Sunny1 refuses: the moth aided Weaver, and for that, it dies. He severs its head with his shield's rim.

May contain spoilers
Analysis

The Fifth Step of Shadow Dance is both Sunny's greatest triumph and his most dangerous gamble. By becoming a Stone Saint, he gains immunity to the Puppeteer's power, but nearly loses himself forever. Kai's intervention through reciting names is the emotional core of the arc: identity is not self-contained but constituted through relationships. The Puppeteer's final argument (that it and Sunny share enemies in the gods) is almost convincing, but Sunny's refusal to ally with anyone who served Weaver demonstrates an emerging moral clarity beneath his cynical exterior.

The Nine's Truth

Slayer killed Weaver twice, and the Spell is a lullaby

Before killing the Puppeteer, Sunny1 receives a final vision by sacrificing the Snow Tyrant figurine. He witnesses the end of the Doom War: Weaver, mortally wounded, staggers through the Shadow Realm to the Void Gate. There, Slayer10 (Orphne of the Nine) stabs them through the chest.

Weaver dies, and their seven Divine soul cores become the anchors of a great spell woven from Strings of Fate: the Nightmare Spell. The Spell then consumes the remaining gods and daemons, lulling the Forgotten God back to sleep.

Weaver speaks to Sunny1 across time, calling him 'epigone' and promising to show him how gods die. The vision shows the Spell's true purpose: to trap the Forgotten God in an endless nightmare while training mortals to become new gods and eventually kill him.

May contain spoilers
Analysis

This revelation fundamentally recontextualizes the entire series. The Nightmare Spell is not a curse or a trial but a desperate contingency plan conceived by the Demon of Fate. Weaver, the series's most enigmatic figure, is revealed as both the architect of the gods' destruction and humanity's potential salvation. Orphne (Slayer) killing Weaver twice, first in battle then as a willing sacrifice, positions her as perhaps the most consequential mortal in history. Sunny's title as 'epigone' confirms he is Weaver's intended successor, carrying the forbidden lineage toward an apocalyptic confrontation with the Dream God.

Waking in Mirage City

Sunny becomes a noir detective in a city of Others

Sunny1 and Effie3 enter the Hall of Imagination beneath True Bastion. They awaken in Mirage City, a rain-soaked metropolis of 20 million people resembling pre-Dark Times Earth. Sunny1 is the Devil Detective, a suspended cop investigating the Nihilist serial killer.

Effie3 is his new partner, a former athlete turned detective. Both are stripped of their powers and memories of their true selves, though Effie3 regains hers first. Everything in Mirage City is an illusion created by the Great Mirror of the Demon of Imagination, populated by Others (reflection-beings) playing assigned roles.

Sunny's1 therapist is a human version of Saint;9 Morgan7 is a patient in an asylum. The city's Castellan, a reflection of Omer of the Nine, has gone rogue and created this fantasy for Mordret's6 other half.

May contain spoilers
Analysis

Mirage City is a genre-shift that serves a profound thematic purpose: what happens when omnipotent beings are forced to be mundane? Sunny, a demigod who commands legions, must solve a mystery with only his wits and fists. The noir setting externalizes his internal state: a man haunted by obsessions, unable to sleep, driven by guilt and rage. The city itself is a prison for the Other Mordret (the CEO), a place where his fantasies of a loving family are made real, yet all of it is hollow. The Castellan's breakdown mirrors the breaking of the world itself: systems meant to create harmony producing only chaos.

Two Mordrets, One Truth

The Prince of Nothing reveals his Flaw's secret

Sunny's1 investigation leads him to the Valor Group CEO, a charming and seemingly innocent Mordret6 who shows no memory of his true self. Sunny1 soon encounters the real Mordret,6 ragged and hiding, who confirms there are two versions: when Mordret6 was twelve, his Flaw shattered him into seven pieces. The CEO inherited death (if he dies, all fragments die), mercy, and other gentle traits.

The Prince of Nothing absorbed strength, ruthlessness, and the inability to feel regret. Five other fragments were killed and absorbed by the Prince. Sunny1 realizes the Nihilist is not Mordret6 but Mirage City itself, acting as a serial killer to remove contradictory elements. The real threat is the city's rogue Castellan.

May contain spoilers
Analysis

Mordret's shattered self is a dark mirror of Sunny's own fragmentation across seven incarnations. Where Sunny integrated his multiplicity, Mordret was broken and then cannibalized himself. The CEO Mordret is what remains when a person is stripped of anger, hatred, and ambition: pleasant but fundamentally incomplete. The Prince's inability to feel regret explains his monstrous actions without excusing them. This revelation transforms Mordret from a simple villain into a tragic figure: he did not choose to be a monster; he was made one by necessity and design.

The Dam Breaks

Corruption floods the city as the Castellan is revealed

Sunny,1 Effie,3 Morgan,7 and Saint9 storm Mirage Castle to confront Madoc (Whispering Blade's reflection), the chairman behind the Nihilist cover-up. The chairman's shoddy renovation of the Northern Dam is the secret he kills to protect. Mordret6 pushes Madoc from the castle tower, absorbing his essence. Then the dam collapses, and a tidal wave destroys Mirage City.

Sunny1 realizes Mordret6 has been absorbing Others' essence to regain power. In the flooded city's depths, they find the Castellan: a street musician playing guitar, who is actually the reflection of Omer of the Nine. He is breaking down, unable to maintain the illusion any longer. Before they can negotiate, Mordret6 possesses the Castellan's body and attacks.

May contain spoilers
Analysis

The flood is both literal destruction and symbolic baptism: the illusory city must be washed away for truth to emerge. The Castellan's identity as Omer's reflection ties the Mirage City arc to the revelations of the Death Game, creating a unified mythology. Omer's mission was to convince the Demon of Imagination to join the Doom War, which he accomplished through a thousand stories. His reflection has spent eons telling a single story (Mirage City) and has forgotten how to end it. The tragedy of the Castellan is that of a storyteller who outlived his audience.

Weaver's Reflection

Sunny absorbs Mind Weave at great cost

Mordret,6 now inhabiting the Castellan, battles Saint9 and Morgan7 while Sunny1 and Effie3 flee to the Great Mirror. Sunny1 uncovers the black cloth covering it, revealing a towering reflection of Weaver: a hundred-meter figure in a tattered mantle and snarling wooden mask. The mere sight of it destroys Mordret's6 vessel, obliterating the Castellan's body.

Sunny's1 reflection overlaps with Weaver's, and the fragment of the Demon's lineage enters him. He blacks out for two weeks. When he wakes, his mind has expanded limitlessly: Mind Weave has given him the capacity to perceive and process thousands of simultaneous inputs, controlling his Shadow Legion with unprecedented precision.

May contain spoilers
Analysis

Weaver's reflection is less a trap and more a final gift and test: only the heir of Weaver's lineage could survive its gaze, and Mordret's destruction demonstrates the lethal boundary between those chosen and those merely present. Mind Weave transforms Sunny from a general who issues commands to a hive-mind that directly inhabits his army, making him exponentially more dangerous. But the cost is existential: his consciousness is becoming less human, more distributed, closer to the divine but further from what he cherishes.

King of Nothing

Mordret becomes Supreme by devouring the Skinwalker

In the Eastern Quadrant, the war against the Skinwalker is failing. The Great Terror has infected millions. Then, every vessel suddenly freezes. Mordret6 has challenged the Skinwalker to a soul duel within its own corrupted soul. For weeks, he battles the abomination, tearing out and reforging his own soul cores as Corruption eats them.

Finally, he shatters himself into a million pieces to steal every vessel simultaneously, destroying the Skinwalker and becoming the seventh Sovereign. His Domain encompasses only himself: a nation of one. He brings his millions of vessels (human and Nightmare Creature alike) into his Mirror Realm and negotiates with Nephis2 and Sunny1 for territory in the Hollow Mountains.

May contain spoilers
Analysis

Mordret's ascension is the inverse of Nephis's: she united humanity through inspiration; he subjugates millions of stolen bodies through domination. His Domain of Nothing (no territory, no subjects, only self) is philosophically fascinating: can a Sovereign exist who rules nothing but himself? The soul duel against the Skinwalker, fought entirely in the unseen realm of souls, represents a new mode of Supreme combat. Mordret's victory also resolves a major threat (the Skinwalker) while creating a new, unpredictable ally-enemy who now holds his own death hostage inside his soul.

The Exploration Report

Sunny anonymously publishes the truth of everything

While one incarnation recovers from Mind Weave, Sunny1 writes 'The Exploration Report on Everything,' a comprehensive account of the Dream Realm's history: the Void, the Flame, the seven gods, the Forgotten God, the daemons, the Doom War, the Nine, Weaver, and the Nightmare Spell's true purpose. He delivers it to Teacher Julius, who publishes it.

The world erupts. Academics make breakthroughs; the public is stunned. Nobody knows who Nobody is, but everyone speculates. Sunny1 creates a censored version that omits the Forgotten God's name, protecting ordinary people from forbidden knowledge. A secret trial will grant access to the full version, incentivizing the curious to grow stronger.

May contain spoilers
Analysis

The Report is Sunny's most subversive act: he democratizes the knowledge that Sovereigns hoarded. This is not merely generosity but strategy: more people armed with truth can contribute to humanity's survival. The anonymous authorship (Nobody) is deeply ironic for a man who craves to be remembered, yet it also liberates him from the burden of fame, allowing the ideas to spread without the messenger becoming a target. The report also positions Sunny as a philosopher-king, fulfilling Eurys's accidental prophecy that he is a 'philosopher.'

Voyage to the Eternal City

A dead city on the sea floor holds an immortal prison

Sunny1 joins Jet5 aboard the Night Garden to sail to the Eternal City, where the next piece of Weaver's lineage is hidden. They follow a star map revealed in the ship's dreams, braving Old Tom (a Cursed horror of the depths) and the Dutchman (a wraith ship with an army of ghosts).

At the sea floor, they find the city preserved under a dome, populated by beautiful immortals who are actually vessels for the Flesh of Kanakht, a parasitic Great Terror. The city's sorcery makes everything unkillable. Sunny1 deploys the Shadow Legion, using Nightmare's Dream Curse to subdue the immortals. At the Lighthouse, they find Nightwalker,11 the founder of the House of Night, alive after decades of imprisonment.

May contain spoilers
Analysis

The Eternal City is the nightmare of Repose made manifest: a paradise where death is denied becomes a hell of endless suffering. The immortals, their minds long gone, serve as hollow hosts for a parasite, illustrating the Demon of Repose's cruel genius. Nightwalker's survival after Asterion's betrayal transforms a legendary figure into a living resource, adding a near-Supreme combatant to humanity's ranks. The expedition also deepens Jet's character: she faces her natural prey (wraiths) and her existential opposite (immortals), testing the limits of her undead existence.

Soul Reaper's Feast

Jet devours the Soul of Kanakht from within

The Dutchman's captain, Aletes of the Nine, wields the Soul of Kanakht as a cutlass. In battle, Jet5 activates the Heart of Kanakht's time-freezing power and, instead of killing the captain, severs his hand and grabs the cutlass.

She is consumed by the Soul, finding herself in a realm of captured souls. As a wraith herself, she retains enough autonomy to unleash her scythe, harvesting every imprisoned soul in a single strike (space and time are meaningless there). The influx of fragments balloons her soul core to near-Supreme proportions.

She bursts free and beheads Aletes, ending the Dutchman's millennia-long reign of terror. Simultaneously, Nephis2 absorbs the Madness of Kanakht into her mind and incinerates it, mastering the Knowledge of Corruption.

May contain spoilers
Analysis

Jet's victory encapsulates her character: rather than overpower, she subverts. She turns the Soul's own nature (its infinite interior where all souls occupy the same space) into its fatal weakness. Her soul core's expansion brings her closer to Supremacy than any other Saint, but at the cost of dangerous imbalance. The parallel victories (Jet consuming the Soul, Nephis consuming the Madness) suggest that Kanakht's fragments are most vulnerable to those who can internalize them, a dark mirror to Sunny's own practice of absorbing Weaver's lineage.

A New Beginning

Sunny absorbs Spirit Weave and Asterion falls from the Moon

In the Palace's heart, Sunny1 finds a void chamber where Repose imprisoned the shadows of immortals to deny them death. He opens the Shadow Lantern's Gate, releasing the shadows into the Shadow Realm and breaking the city's sorcery. A dying star hides a silk scroll: the Spirit Weave.

The scroll contains Weaver's will and a fable about Rime (Repose), the first daemon to die and the first to escape death. Absorbing Spirit Weave enhances Sunny's1 will and grants it an affinity to Fate, despite his fateless state.

The Eternal City collapses; Nightwalker11 nearly dies from deferred mortality but Nephis2 heals him. Later, in the Shadow Realm, Sunny1 confronts Eurys13 about the Nine's sins, then tries and fails to kill him. Far away, on Earth, a meteor falls: Asterion16 returns from the Moon.

May contain spoilers
Analysis

Spirit Weave grants Sunny affinity to Fate, an ironic boon for a fateless being. The fable of Repose reveals the daemon's origin: she was the first to die and the first to escape Shadow God's embrace, making the Eternal City a perverse reenactment of her own liberation. Eurys's confrontation forces Sunny to grapple with moral complexity: the Nine destroyed the world, but they were victims of genocide who chose apocalyptic vengeance. Sunny cannot condemn them without examining his own capacity for similar atrocities. Asterion's return, after decades of foreshadowing, transforms him from a distant myth into an immediate existential threat, setting up the final conflict.

Epilogue

Sunny1 visits Eurys13 in the Shadow Realm, recounting his adventures. When he confronts Eurys13 about the Nine's destruction of the world, the skeleton offers no remorse, only the exhausted nihilism of a being who has spent millennia in isolation. Eurys13 argues that anyone in his position, watching everyone they loved slaughtered and enslaved, would have done the same.

Sunny1 tries to kill him but lacks the power to break Shadow God's curse. Far away, on a desolate plain on Earth, a meteor streaks across the night sky. A man in a charred spacesuit climbs from the crater, removes his shattered helmet, and inhales the poisonous air with a smile. Asterion,16 the Dreamspawn, has returned from his lunar prison after decades.

May contain spoilers
Analysis

The Eurys conversation forces a reckoning with the story's deepest moral question: is apocalyptic vengeance ever justified? Eurys's refusal to feel guilt and Sunny's inability to condemn him absolutely create an uncomfortable ethical space where both positions have validity. Sunny's failed attempt to kill Eurys confirms that even a Supreme cannot overcome the oldest divine curses, a humbling reminder of the power gap between demigods and true gods. Asterion's return on the final page transforms the volume's accumulated gains (new Supremes, restored heroes, gathered lineage pieces) into assets for an impending war. The Dreamspawn's smile suggests he has not been broken by his imprisonment but rather perfected by it, making him a terrifying antagonist for the next volume.

Analysis

This volume operates on three narrative scales simultaneously. At the personal level, it charts Sunny's1 evolution from a man defined by his escape from fate toward someone willing to reclaim his bonds, surrendering freedom for connection. His decision crystallizes gradually across the three adventures: in the Death Game, he learns what the Nine sacrificed and wonders if he could do the same; in Mirage City, Effie's3 blunt wisdom about marriage as chosen surrender reframes the Shadow Bond as potential trust rather than inevitable enslavement; in the Eternal City, Nightwalker's11 willingness to become mortal for the chance to return home demonstrates that even the longest imprisonment can end with a choice. By the volume's close, Sunny1 has mentally committed to regaining his True Name, a decision that will chain him to Nephis2 but restore his place in human memory.

At the mythological level, the volume completes the cosmology that the series has been building. The Nine are revealed not as background lore but as the architects of the current world, their genocidal vengeance against the Empire of War having escalated into a deicide that destroyed all existence. The Nightmare Spell is recontextualized from antagonist to desperate safeguard, and Weaver transforms from inscrutable schemer to tragic visionary. These revelations do not resolve the moral tension but deepen it: the Nine were monsters, but they were made by monsters; the Spell is horrific, but the alternative is universal annihilation. There are no clean hands in this mythology, only varying degrees of necessary evil.

The volume's structure, three self-contained adventures bookended by Eurys13 conversations, mirrors the Spell's own mechanism of Nightmares: each adventure is a sealed crucible that tests and transforms Sunny1 before releasing him changed. The Death Game teaches him conceptual combat and grants Flesh Weave; Mirage City teaches him surrender and grants Mind Weave; the Eternal City teaches him the price of immortality and grants Spirit Weave. Each also prepares one of his companions for Supremacy: Kai4 gains confidence, Effie3 learns to let go, Jet5 accepts her nature as a wraith among wraiths. These parallel arcs suggest that raising new Sovereigns is not about individual training but about completing collective narrative arcs, each soul needing its own harrowing journey to forge the necessary defiance.

Asterion's16 return at the volume's end transforms what seemed like a gradual preparation arc into a desperate race against time. The Dreamspawn, who has been a distant name for volumes, emerges as a memetic horror: a being whose very name is a virus, who cannot be known without being spread, who assimilates lineages like a chimera, and who has spent decades on the Moon refining his powers. His first breath upon returning to Earth, described with almost sensual appreciation, marks him as a being who has not suffered in exile but has instead been honed by it. The stage is set for a conflict between four Sovereigns (Sunny,1 Nephis,2 Mordret,6 and Asterion16) that will determine whether humanity has a future or becomes merely the Dreamspawn's next meal.

Characters

Sunny (Sunless, Lord of Shadows)

Sovereign of Death, Weaver's Heir

A Supreme Titan who faked his death to rule humanity's shadows while Nephis2 rules its light. Once a starving orphan from the outskirts, Sunny1 clawed his way to demigodhood through cunning, murder, and an obsessive will to survive. He is split across seven incarnations, each independent yet unified in consciousness. His Flaw prevents him from lying, making him dangerously honest in a world of deception. Having been severed from fate, no one can remember his true identity, leaving him existentially isolated. He seeks to collect all seven fragments of Weaver's forbidden lineage, both to gain power and to understand the purpose the Demon of Fate intended for him. His love for Nephis2 anchors his fraying humanity.

Nephis (Changing Star)

Sovereign of Humanity, Last Immortal Flame

The ruler of the Human Domain and the most powerful being in the waking world. A Dreamspawn born of both worlds, she wields soul flame that can heal or annihilate. Her Aspect is fueled by longing: the more she and her followers desire something, the more powerful she becomes. She endured years of solitary agony on the Forgotten Shore, emerging with an unbreakable will and a burning ambition to destroy the Nightmare Spell. Her Flaw inflicts constant, excruciating pain, which she has learned to weaponize as a focusing agent. She loves Sunny1 deeply but their visions of humanity's future diverge: she wants to kill the Forgotten God itself, while he would settle for mere survival.

Effie (Raised by Wolves, Saint Athena)

Steward of the East, Transcendent Mother

A Saint of immense physical strength who spent her childhood crippled and wheelchair-bound, dreaming of freedom. Her Dormant Ability makes her body as tough as steel. She rules Bastion and the eastern territories of the Human Domain while raising a Transcendent son, Little Ling. Her easygoing, food-obsessed exterior masks a woman of fierce determination who has already built everything she ever wanted: a family, a home, and the power to protect them. Her greatest obstacle to Supremacy is not lack of will but lack of desperation; she is perhaps too satisfied with her life to manifest the tyrannical desire needed to reshape the world.

Kai (Nightingale, Dragonslayer)

Steward of the West, Voice of Truth

A devastatingly handsome Saint whose Aspect compels the world to obey his spoken commands, but simultaneously forces him to always tell the truth when asked a direct question. He can see through solid objects and assume the form of a dragon. Despite his fearsome titles, he is plagued by self-doubt, always feeling like the least exceptional member of Nephis's2 cohort. He rules Ravenheart and the western territories, surrounded by the seven daughters of the slain Ki Song. His journey in Ariel's Death Game teaches him to trust his own strength, though he remains the most gentle-hearted of humanity's champions.

Jet (Soul Reaper)

Undead Captain of Night Garden

A Saint who cannot generate her own essence, sustained only by the souls she reaps with each kill. She appears as a pale, beautiful woman with icy blue eyes and an easy, laidback smile. Her Aspect allows her to directly attack souls, making her uniquely lethal against wraiths and spectral beings. She leads the government forces and captains the Night Garden, a living ship built by the Demon of Repose. Having come from the outskirts like Sunny1, she understands his background and serves as a mentor figure. She has accepted her deathless state with dark humor, calling herself a zombie and treating apocalyptic battles with the nonchalance of someone who has already died countless times.

Mordret (Prince of Nothing, King of Nothing)

Sovereign of Reflections, Fractured Self

The son of the late King of Swords who was shattered into seven fragments by his Flaw as a child. The dominant fragment, the Prince of Nothing, killed and absorbed five others, becoming a near-complete being who lacks only regret and death. He can inhabit any reflection, travel between mirrors, and create a Mirror Realm within his soul. His other surviving fragment is the innocent CEO of Mirage City, who inherited mercy, gentleness, and their shared death. Mordret6 was raised by Asterion16 after being given away by his father, and he hates the Dreamspawn with a passion that rivals his hatred for Valor. He attains Supremacy by devouring the Skinwalker in a soul duel.

Morgan (Princess of Valor)

Exiled Heir, Razor-Touched Killer

Anvil's daughter and Mordret's6 sister. Her Flaw makes everything she touches cut, forcing her to wear gloves constantly and live without physical intimacy. She is a brilliant military strategist who led armies during the Domain War. After her father's death, she discovered Ki Song's secrets and learned about Mordret's6 other self. She entered the Palace of Imagination to kill the CEO Mordret6, hoping to end her brother permanently, but found herself unable to murder an innocent version of him. Sharp-tongued, pragmatic, and emotionally guarded, she is a survivor who has lost everything yet refuses to break.

Rain (Promise of a Distant Sky)

Sunny's Sister, Shaper of Names

Sunny's1 adopted younger sister who Awakened naturally without the Nightmare Spell. Her Aspect allows her to bestow Names upon things and assign Epithets that temporarily alter their properties. A pacifist by nature, she cannot kill living beings because of her Flaw, forcing her to be creative in combat. She works as a builder and engineer while secretly teaching others how to Awaken naturally. She also serves in the Shadow Clan despite her gentle disposition. Her relationship with Sunny1 is her greatest treasure, though she does not know he is the Lord of Shadows.

Saint (Jade Saint, Onyx Saint)

Sunny's First Shadow, Silent Knight

A living statue created by Nether, the Prince of the Underworld. She was Sunny's1 first Shadow, bound to him since the Forgotten Shore. She never speaks but communicates through action, wielding a sword and shield with flawless mastery. She evolved to Supreme Rank after absorbing Nothing essence in Mirage City, gaining the Shield of Nothing that negates enemies' powers. In the illusory Mirage City, she appeared as a stunningly beautiful psychiatrist, revealing her capacity for a human existence she cannot truly inhabit. She is the general of the Shadow Legion, utterly loyal and terrifyingly competent.

Slayer (Orphne's Shadow)

Weaver's Killer, Feral Huntress

The shadow of Orphne of the Nine, the woman who killed the Demon of Fate twice. As a Shadow Creature, she roamed the Shadow Realm for thousands of years before Sunny1 killed and claimed her. She communicates through action, not words, and demands Sunny's1 blood as payment for her services. Her Aspect is oddly peaceful: she can communicate with beasts, enhance her senses, and shapeshift into any creature she has tasted. Her true lethality comes from her Pure Soul, which makes her attacks flawlessly sincere and therefore uniquely deadly. She remembers nothing of her mortal life, existing as a pure vessel of killing intent.

Nightwalker

Founder of House of Night, Returned Legend

The legendary founder of the Great Clan Night, who vanished decades ago searching for the Eternal City. He was betrayed and killed by Asterion16, then resurrected by the city's sorcery as an immortal prisoner. He spent decades fighting Great Nightmare Creatures alone, dying thousands of times, yet somehow preserved his sanity. His Aspect allows him to always find a path to his destination and fold space. His isolation has made him aloof and detached, with a dark sense of humor and a profound appreciation for human company despite his antisocial nature. He is Naeve's15 father but barely knows his son.

Cassie (Song of the Fallen)

Blind Oracle, Nephis's Shadow

A blind seer whose Dormant Ability allows her to perceive the world through the eyes of anyone she has marked. She cannot see the future anymore since fate was unraveled, but she can sense underlying connections and truths. She is Nephis's2 most trusted advisor and the architect of many of the cohort's schemes. She and Sunny1 perpetrated the act that cut him from fate, a decision that haunts her even as it liberated him. Her Aspect Legacy involves memory manipulation; she can erase or restore memories in others. Quiet, thoughtful, and bearing immense guilt, she serves as the mental link connecting all members of the cohort across vast distances.

Eurys of the Nine

Immortal Skeleton, Doomed Prince

Once a prince of a peaceful realm destroyed by the Empire of War, he became one of the Nine fated champions who swore to kill the gods. He served as a slave and spy, eventually infiltrating the Demon Army and slitting a god's throat. Cursed by Shadow God, he cannot die and has spent thousands of years as a talking skeleton, first nailed to a tree, then crawling across the Shadow Realm. His mind has cycled through madness, remorse, hatred, and indifference so many times that he no longer cares about his crimes. He wants nothing more than the death he has been denied, and he asked Sunny1 to kill him as a favor.

Aiko (Shadow Fairy)

Shadow Clan's Operations Chief

A petite, fashion-obsessed Awakened who runs the Shadow Clan's vast network across both worlds. She started as Kai's4 manager after the Forgotten Shore and later ran Sunny's1 Memory shop before being conned (or so Sunny1 claims) into managing his entire clandestine operation. She is ruthlessly pragmatic about money and fiercely protective of those she considers hers. Despite her small stature and non-combat role, she survived the Dreamer Army and carries the quiet competence of all Forgotten Shore survivors.

Naeve

Saint of Night, Nightwalker's Son

A Saint of the fallen House of Night, son of the legendary Nightwalker11. He can transform into a sea serpent made of glacial ice and navigates the Stormsea. He is Jet's5 trusted subordinate on the Night Garden, having lost most of his clan to Mordret's6 machinations. He barely knew his father, who vanished when Naeve15 was young, and finding Nightwalker11 alive in the Eternal City is both a shock and an unresolved wound. He has a teenage daughter whom he protects fiercely.

Asterion (the Dreamspawn)

Third Sovereign, Lunar Prisoner

The first human child born in the Dream Realm, the original Dreamspawn. He was raised by the mysterious Path of Ascension cult and only encountered human civilization as an adult. He bears the lineage of Heart God and has the ability to consume and assimilate other divine lineages. His Aspect allows him to read minds, manipulate emotions, and spread his name like a memetic virus: anyone who learns it becomes a carrier who unconsciously spreads it further. He was betrayed and imprisoned on the Moon by Anvil and Ki Song, but with both dead, he is now free. Mordret6 describes him as Nephis's2 dark mirror: she rejected her Nightmare nature to become humanity's symbol; he embraced it to become something beyond human.

Plot Devices

Weaver's Forbidden Lineage

Seven fragments grant divine power

The Demon of Fate scattered seven pieces of their forbidden lineage across the world, hidden in locations tied to seven concepts: Blood (stolen by the Vile Thieving Bird, found on Forgotten Shore), Bone (lost to rot, found in Ebony Tower), Flesh (lost to Dread, found in Ariel's Death Game), Soul (lost to sorrow, found in Tomb of Ariel), Spirit (lost to respite, found in Eternal City), Mind (lost to darkness, found in Palace of Imagination), and Shadow (location unknown). Each fragment alters Sunny's1 body and soul, granting him enhanced physical traits, resistance to damage, the ability to see and manipulate essence strings, increased mental capacity, and an affinity to Fate. When multiple fragments fuse, they create synergistic effects beyond their individual powers. The lineage is expressly forbidden by the gods because it comes from the Forgotten God through Weaver.

Ariel's Death Game

Jade board realm where domains battle

A game created by the Demon of Dread in which two players command armies represented by 49 mountain-squares. The board contains Castles (never change color), Shrines (grant boons or truth for sacrifices), and an Axis Tree at center. Figure movement is restricted by dawn (Snow Domain) and dusk (Ash Domain). The game was originally played by Weaver (Snow) and Ariel (Ash) with Nightmare Creatures as pieces, with the stakes being truths unknown to the other daemon. When Sunny1, Kai4, and Slayer10 are trapped inside, they become the Ash Tyrant and Ash Beasts, facing 12 Snow figures including Cursed abominations. Slaying enemies grants their shades to the victor, making the game a self-perpetuating war machine where the strong grow stronger.

The Nightmare Spell

Lullaby trapping the Forgotten God in dreams

Created by Weaver using Strings of Fate and their own death as a catalyst, the Spell consumed the gods and daemons at the end of the Doom War. It constructs Nightmares around the Seeds of Corruption that emanate from the Forgotten God's sleeping mind, allowing humans to destroy the Seeds from within. Simultaneously, it ruthlessly trains mortals to become powerful enough to challenge and eventually kill the Dream God. The Spell is both a prison and a training ground, a curse and a blessing. Its true purpose has been obscured for eons, with most believing it to be a malevolent force rather than a desperate contingency to save existence.

The Palace of Imagination (Great Mirror)

Mirage's realm where illusions become real

A hidden world inside the Great Mirror beneath True Bastion, created by the Demon of Imagination. It is populated by Others, reflection-beings who take the roles assigned by the realm's master. Without a master, the Castellan (the reflection of Omer of the Nine) maintained a single illusion: Mirage City, a 20-million-person metropolis resembling pre-Dark Times Earth, created as a fantasy for the Other Mordret6. The realm's sorcery can make anything imagined real, but when multiple human minds with conflicting desires enter, the Castellan breaks down trying to reconcile them. The realm's Component grants Effie3, as the master of Bastion, the authority to reshape reality within it.

The Shadow Lantern

Portable Gate to the Shadow Realm

A Divine Memory taking the form of a small stone lantern, a replica of Shadow God's original relic created by the Nightmare Spell. When opened, its Gate allows shadows to pass between the living world and the Shadow Realm. Sunny1 uses it to store his Shadows, travel to the Realm of Death, and summon true darkness. In the Eternal City, he weaponizes it by opening the Gate within Repose's void chamber, creating a singularity that draws all imprisoned shadows into the Shadow Realm, breaking the city's immortality sorcery. The lantern has a will of its own and can become terrifyingly destructive when the natural laws it violates attempt to reassert themselves.
