Erich Fromm var en tysk-amerikansk socialpsykolog, psykoanalytiker och filosof.
Född 1900 flydde han från Nazityskland och bosatte sig i USA. Fromm var knuten till Frankfurtskolan inom kritisk teori och var med och grundade The William Alanson White Institute of Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis and Psychology i New York City.
Hans arbete förenade på ett unikt sätt freudianska och marxistiska teorier, där han utforskade samspelet mellan psykologi och samhälle.
Under mitten av 1900-talet hade Fromm professurer i psykologi i både USA och Mexiko.
Han hävdade att den mänskliga karaktären formas av både biologiska drifter (enligt Freud) och sociala och ekonomiska system (enligt Marx).
