Marc Léopold Benjamin Bloch was a French medieval historian born on 6 July 1886 in Lyon, and one of the most influential scholars of his era.
A co-founder of the groundbreaking Annales School of historiography, he pioneered new approaches to studying history through social and economic lenses.
His most celebrated works include French Rural History, Feudal Society, and the posthumously published The Historian's Craft.
Beyond academia, Bloch served as a French Army officer and was an active member of the French Resistance during World War II. He was captured and executed by the Gestapo on 16 June 1944.
