اولیور ولف ساکس یک عصب‌شناس و نویسنده‌ی بریتانیایی بود که به خاطر کتاب‌های پرفروش خود درباره‌ی بیماران مبتلا به اختلالات عصبی شناخته می‌شود.
او در لندن به دنیا آمد و در یک خانواده‌ی پزشکی بزرگ شد و پس از تحصیل در دانشگاه آکسفورد به ایالات متحده نقل مکان کرد.
ساکس به طور گسترده‌ای با بازماندگان آنسفالیت لته‌رجیکا کار کرد که الهام‌بخش کتابش با عنوان "بیداری‌ها" شد.
او در چندین مؤسسه‌ی معتبر، از جمله دانشگاه کلمبیا و دانشکده پزشکی NYU، مشغول به کار بود.
ساکس به خاطر دستاوردهایش در زمینه‌ی عصب‌شناسی و ادبیات جوایز و افتخارات متعددی دریافت کرد، از جمله انتصاب به عنوان فرمانده‌ی نشان امپراتوری بریتانیا.
کار او پل ارتباطی میان رویکردهای علمی و انسانی به پزشکی بود.
