جوزف یوجین استیگلیتز یک اقتصاددان برجسته‌ی آمریکایی و استاد دانشگاه کلمبیا است.
او در سال 2001 جایزه‌ی نوبل علوم اقتصادی و در سال 1979 مدال جان بیتس کلارک را دریافت کرد.
استیگلیتز به عنوان معاون ارشد و اقتصاددان ارشد بانک جهانی خدمت کرده و به خاطر دیدگاه‌های انتقادی‌اش نسبت به مدیریت جهانی‌سازی و اقتصاد بازار آزاد شناخته می‌شود.
او بنیان‌گذار ابتکار گفتگوی سیاستی است و در مؤسسات مختلفی در سراسر جهان فعالیت دارد.
استیگلیتز در حوزه‌ی اقتصاد بسیار مورد استناد قرار می‌گیرد و از رفع نابرابری و بهبود توسعه‌ی بین‌المللی حمایت می‌کند.
آثار او چالش‌هایی را برای حکمت اقتصادی متعارف ایجاد کرده و بر اهمیت مداخله‌ی دولت در بازارها تأکید دارد.
