جیمز آلن نویسنده‌ی فلسفی بریتانیایی بود که در سال ۱۸۶۴ به دنیا آمد.
پس از قتل پدرش در سن ۱۵ سالگی، آلن برای حمایت از خانواده‌اش در صنعت مشغول به کار شد.
در سن ۳۸ سالگی، تحت تأثیر لئو تولستوی، به زندگی ساده‌ای از تفکر و تأمل با همسر و دخترش در دوان، انگلستان بازنشسته شد.
در آنجا، او در طول نه سال ۱۹ اثر نوشت و بر قدرت فکر برای بهبود قابلیت‌های شخصی تمرکز کرد.
مشهورترین کتاب او، «چگونه یک مرد فکر می‌کند»، که در سال ۱۹۰۲ منتشر شد، به کلاسیک در ژانر خودیاری تبدیل شد.
آثار آلن همچنان بر مردم در سرتاسر جهان تأثیر می‌گذارد، از جمله بر جنبش تفکر نو، با وجود اینکه در طول زندگی‌اش شهرت یا ثروتی نداشت.
او در سال ۱۹۱۲ درگذشت.
