جورج اورول، با نام اصلی اریک آرتور بلر، نویسنده و روزنامه‌نگار انگلیسی بود که به خاطر نقد اجتماعی تیز و مخالفتش با تمامیت‌خواهی شناخته می‌شود.
او از تجربیاتش به عنوان افسر پلیس استعماری در برمه و جنگیدن در جنگ داخلی اسپانیا برای غنی‌سازی نوشته‌هایش بهره برد.
مشهورترین آثار اورول، مزرعه حیوانات و هزار و نهصد و هشتاد و چهار، به نمادهای فرهنگی تبدیل شده‌اند، در حالی که مقالاتش درباره سیاست و زبان همچنان تأثیرگذار هستند.
