لاحظ شوارتز أن هذه الأجزاء تتنظم بأنماط متشابهة بين المرضى، ووجد أنه عندما تشعر هذه الأجزاء بالأمان، يتمكن المريض من الوصول إلى حالة "الذات" التي تتسم بالثقة والانفتاح والرحمة.
في هذه الحالة من الذات، يستطيع المريض أن يشفي أجزائه بفعالية.
