جوزيف ميرفي، الكاتب الأيرلندي ووزير العلوم الإلهية، بدأ مسيرته بدراسة الكهنوت الكاثوليكي لكنه غادر اليسوعيين بعد تجربة صلاة شفاء، وانتقل إلى الولايات المتحدة.
انخرط ميرفي في حركات الفكر الجديد، مثل العلوم الدينية والعلوم الإلهية، وحصل على درجة الدكتوراه في علم النفس، وأسّس جماعة كبيرة للعلوم الإلهية في لوس أنجلوس.
كتب ميرفي العديد من الكتب التي تناولت قوة العقل الباطن، جامعًا بين المفاهيم الدينية والنفسية.
كان لعمله تأثير كبير على أدب التنمية الذاتية، حيث ركز على دور العقل في تشكيل الواقع وتحقيق الأهداف الشخصية.
