إريك فروم كان عالم نفس اجتماعي ألماني-أمريكي، محلل نفسي، وفيلسوف.
وُلِد في عام 1900، هرب من ألمانيا النازية واستقر في الولايات المتحدة.
ارتبط فروم بمدرسة فرانكفورت للنظرية النقدية وساهم في تأسيس معهد ويليام ألانسون وايت للطب النفسي والتحليل النفسي وعلم النفس في مدينة نيويورك.
تميزت أعماله بمزج فريد بين النظريات الفرويدية والماركسية، حيث استكشف التفاعل بين علم النفس والمجتمع.
شغل فروم مناصب أكاديمية في علم النفس في الولايات المتحدة والمكسيك خلال منتصف القرن العشرين.
وقد جادل بأن الشخصية الإنسانية تتشكل من خلال الدوافع البيولوجية (وفقًا لفرويد) والأنظمة الاجتماعية والاقتصادية (وفقًا لماركس).
